Water Heater Problems - How To Address Them

Water heater problems are nothing to take mildly as they can cause quite an inconvenience, especially if they occur with a bad timing. Many of the issues though can be fixed quite easily and some avoided altogether. Sadly several water heaters sit in the basement or closet for years with no one taking notice of them and this lack of maintenance and care brings about unnecessary problems in the long run.

Most of the problems with water heaters can be linked back to one of two things. Those are age and insufficient regular maintenance. The second item can directly influence a water heater's life span by making it to work harder. Below we will cover some of the common water heater problems and fixes.

If you have no hot water whatsoever, then the first thing you have to check is the thermostat. Try turning it a little higher and check if that makes a difference. If that does not help then the heating element, - it can be electric or gas- may have gone bad. When your water heater is gas powered, then the unit you must check is called the thermocouple. These are fairly easy to replace if you are DIY oriented, however if you do not know what you are doing, you would better call a service to solve the problem.

Not having enough hot water is a water heater problem that is often seen in older water heaters. This is commonly caused by a build up of sediment which literally makes the tank smaller and lowers the water capacity. In order to fix this problem, you have to drain and flush the tank. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to change the dip tube. It directs cool water entering the tank towards the bottom part of the tank, keeping it from mixing with already heated water. Due to normal wear and tear, the dip tube can crack and leak cold water into the tank.

Strange noises that comes from the tank is another water heater problem that is seen often. This can be due to a build up of sediment or a heating element merely burning out. The fix for this problem also requires draining and flushing the tank to get rid of the sediment and replacing the heating element.

Many water heater problems are quite simple and easy to be addressed if you are experienced with repairing heating devices. Except if there is a critical problem like water heater leaking caused by a corrosion in the tank, most of the time simple tools and a little knowledge is all that is required to take care of these challenges.
