Ralph started drinking heavily when he was a junior in high school. From a positive perspective, although he drank hazardously and abusively when he was a teen and a young adult, over the years he has been mostly a moderate drinker.
After he finished his education he eventually got a job at a local truck assembly plant where he worked his way up from stock person, to office assistant, to purchasing assistant, to purchasing manager. Unlike his other positions, as the purchasing manager he over and over again took potential vendors and existing vendors to lunch and to various sporting events.
Although it was not written in stone, meeting with existing vendors and potential vendors frequently involved situations in which alcohol was present. In actual fact, over the past fourteen months, Ralph had begun to extensively increase his work related and his social drinking. This has led to quite a dilemma. More explicitly, the more successful he became as a purchasing agent, the more heavily he began to drink.
In fact, it did not take very long before Ralph's excessive drinking started to negatively affect the money in his savings account, his relationships, his mental health, his work efficiency, and his health. After many weeks of excessive drinking, Ralph, if truth be told, began to get nervous about his abusive and irresponsible drinking and wondered if his alcohol-related concerns were alcoholism signs. To make things worse, his increasing bouts of depression also made him wonder if he was becoming an alcoholic. In short, Ralph obviously needed to learn more about the facts about alcohol abuse and the signs of alcoholism.
So Ralph used his problem solving skills, called his family doctor, and set up an appointment for a complete physical exam. The next week when he saw his health care practitioner, Ralph unfortunately found out that he was an alcoholic. His physician informed Ralph that he needed to get alcohol detoxification and alcohol rehabilitation for his alcohol addiction and that he also needed to get treatment for his depression. In a word, Ralph needed treatment for his alcoholism and depression.
His health care practitioner suggested to Ralph that he take a 45-day leave of absence from work and get admitted into a quality in-patient alcohol rehab clinic where his depression could also be appraised and treated. This is specifically what Ralph did. The good news is that after his treatment for depression and for alcohol addiction, he felt like a new person. In fact, now that he was sober he almost never got depressed and he now understood how to more successfully and productively manage his relationships, his finances, his health, and his job.
Obviously, the biggest test Ralph faced was at the office. To be more specific, he still took his existing vendors and potential vendors to lunch and to various sporting events, but after his alcohol rehabilitation he was able to stay away from drinking while entertaining his clients.
It may be noted that Ralph also discovered that none of his potential vendors or his existing vendors thought any less of him because of his non-alcoholic lifestyle. To the contrary, he discovered that his existing vendors and potential vendors respected him for staying strong to his convictions.
After Ralph went through alcohol rehab he learned that if he refrained from drinking, all of the other meaningful parts of his life would be upgraded. Every so often, it can be emphasized, Ralph missed drinking, but the better health, work performance, relationships, and the better finances he experienced more than counterbalanced his craving for alcohol.
