A Young Gentleman Requires Treatment For His Intense Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Substance Abuse
Nearly eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-three-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to alcohol and drugs. As declared by Benjamin, it is his drug addiction and alcoholism and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship problems.
As explained by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in effect has little or no desire to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed two semesters of graduate school in Italian.
Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something positive about these issues. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets alcohol and drug dependency counseling that results in long lasting sobriety.
It may be asked how treatment would help his chemical dependency. First of all, there are several recently developed physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid a drug and an alcohol drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is utterly nothing beneficial about drug addiction and excessive and hazardous drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the route to legal problems, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, and possibly a premature death. Fourth, treatment for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these psychological issues more effectively and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Due to the fact that Benjamin doesn't have the motivation to carry out much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he urgently needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and remain in his treatment routine.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't comprehend this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he requires for his severe depression, he can redirect his life and begin living with passion, self-respect, and direction.
More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and affirmative change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to get the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his existence.
