A Ninth Grade Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Experiences An Alcohol Overdose, And Learns That Listening In Class Can Make A Difference
Andy was a high school freshman who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and generally wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The essential holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result legally allowed to drive a car or truck and to ingest alcohol.
Andy, however, had a rough time understanding that as a fifteen-year-old adolescent he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, conversely, Andy often drank with his guy friends after school, primarily on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his pals was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and his cronies went to a park and drank for approximately three hours.
After drinking something like five wine coolers, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the outdoor basketball court, one of his guy friends called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.
After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite flabbergasted to gather that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten drinks. When he stated this to the attending physician at the hospital, on the other hand, the healthcare professional informed Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour period of time could surely be quite a bit more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The healthcare professional further explained how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this takes place, a person can pass away.
This was the first cautionary message to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous fashion and that there are consequences for such activities. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The physician also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehab for Andy. His parents were delighted that Andy was safe and sound and informed the physician that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol rehab.
While speaking to his parents, Andy told them that there must be a special reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the peculiar part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school in health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more thoroughly in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to something that was as relevant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
