A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular co-ed high school in the region. Even though she had been teaching for only one year, she had already gained a reputation as an educator with a teaching methodology that encouraged and stimulated students to think and to learn.

As an illustration, one Thursday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed her students and said the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more broad-based point of view and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."

"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt prove that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a person manifests, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol dependent individual."

Miss Jackson then explained to the the students that each student would be responsible for examining two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other members in the class by way of a fifteen minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top six alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After around five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to her students that after she assesses the numbers, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson asked the students in her classroom to look over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within a minute or two, virtually every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was evident that the pupils had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, almost every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, to be exact, "Do you feel exceedingly nauseous when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcohol dependency. She stressed the fact that the foremost difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Essentially this means that when an alcohol dependent person suddenly stops drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to understand the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson recognized that she had inspired and encouraged her students to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
